Red Bull team will be on MotoGP in 2009

Sunday, 27 July 2008
As quoted on Sport Magazine (Spain) that next season there will be a 'new' team, Red Bull-Ducati.The multinational energy drinks has reached an agreement with the owner of Pramac-Ducati, Paolo Campinoti, and with the Italian factory to become the main sponsor of the team, buy a part of it and manage it, a task that until earlier this day was in charge of Spanish Luis D'Antin, who ! stifled by debt and due to disagreements with Campinoti, submitted the resignation efectively after Assen GP.

For its new team in MotoGP, Red Bull has chosen the young pilot Mika Kallio, who for years was sponsored by the manufacturer of beverages and, this season, has led the world 250cc with the Austrian team and still sponsored by the Red Bull.

Kallio will be one of the members of the new structure, which counted with a second pilot to be determined.

Overstrand Overjoyed

Today I attended the official opening of Gansbaai Community Sports centre in Overstrand. The initiative is essentially the brain child of Barclays Bank who created Spaces for Sport Progamme in the UK and has now extended the concept globally and ABSA has adopted the idea.

Local stake holders from both private and public sectors are involved in making this idea a reality. The outcome of this project is to give the community a chance to take part in sports, to enhance their sporting abilities and to encourage the community to mingle with each other.

Various guests who attended the ceremony were Springbok Coach Pie! ter de Villiers, ex Bafana Bafana and Barclays Premier League soccer star Mark Fish and up and coming rugby star Chilliboy Ralepelle as well as few players from Ajax Cape Town to name a few.
The sentiment that echoed when I spoke to them was this is a fantastic initiative and was sure to benefit Overstrand community.

Arsenal can win it all?

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says that his team can win it all next season. The Gunners who were at the top of the Premiership at the beginning of the season ended up finishing third behind champions Manchester United and second placed London rivals Chelsea.

Wenger has belief that his team have what it takes to beat the likes of United. He says that Arsenal can win everything and are close to doing it. Speculation has begun over new signings as Wenger hinted that Arsenal's strength going forward is good but they conceded ten more goals than the top four in the Premier League.

Rampant Bulls has Ludeke Smiling

Vodacom Blue Bulls coach Frans Ludeke reflected on mission accomplished after going back to the top of the Absa Curie Cup standings with a 41-12 victory over the Wildeklawer Griquas.

"We're happy with the five points, it's exactly where we wanted to be at the start of a new week," Ludeke told www.sarugby.co.za. "We might not have played the way we wanted to play, but Griquas challenged us and took the game to us, so I'm happy overall.

"There were plenty of positives to take out of this match but there's a bit we need to work on," he said.

The Vodacom Blue Bulls moved back to the top of the Absa Currie Cup standings with the victory at Loftus Versfeld on Friday evening as the Bulls claimed a four-try bonus point.

They moved one point clear of the Sharks but were made to work hard for that all-important bonus point and had to wait until the final minutes of the match before securing the extra point.

Loo! se forward Dewald Potgieter barged over from a scrum shortly before full-time, his team having been denied by the TMO just minutes before.

Afterwards skipper Wikus van Heerden admitted how important was the four-try bonus point: "There's still a long way to go in the competition and our aim is to get a home semifinal."

The Vodacom Blue Bulls were first on the board in the 17th minute when flyhalf Morné Steyn slotted a penalty, followed by two more from the Bulls No.10, who ended the day with 21 points as he took his tally for the season past the 100-point mark. Steyn – who is relishing life as the Bulls' first-choice pivot this season – is now just eight points behind the Xerox Lions' Earl Rose, the season's top points-scorer.

Bulls fullback Tiger Mangweni scored his team's first try in the 37th minute for a 14-0 lead, but just when it seemed the flood-gates would open up, Griquas hit back through their SA Sevens winger MJ Mentz, the visitor! s going into the break at 14-5 down.

The Bulls, how! ever, wa sted no time in making an impact in the second half with flanker Deon Stegmann bursting away from a ruck and running 50 metres to score. Steyn added the conversion and at 21-5 there was always going to be just one winner in this match. But, to their credit, Griquas were not about to allow their hosts to walk all over them and flyhalf Tobie Botes – a regular scrumhalf playing in the No.10 shirt – scored a fine individual try to keep his team in the match at 21-12.

Steyn goaled two more penalties to stretch his team's lead to 27-12, but poor option-taking and kicking out of hand saw the scoreboard untroubled until the final 10 minutes when Springbok prop Gürthro Steenkamp crashed over from a line-out to give his team hope of registering that all-important bonus point.

The Bulls battered the Griquas line for some time only to be denied by the Television Match Official in the 77th minute. The Bulls had the scrum, which became a penalty. They then kicked to ! touch and won another scrum, with replacement No.8 Potgieter eventually forcing his way over for his team's fourth score.

Top points-scorers:
111 – Earl Rose (Xerox Lions)
103 – Morné Steyn (Vodacom Blue Bulls)
75 – Willem de Waal (Vodacom WP)
68 – Chris Rossouw (Vodacom Free State Cheetahs)
51 – Justin Peach (Boland Cavaliers)

Top try-scorers:

PDV's Bok column ahead of Wales

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers has posted his latest column on the SA Rugby website. Here it is:

There has been a lot of "war" talk from both camps ahead of Saturday's test against Wales in Cardiff. There is nothing wrong with that because it is good for the game, important to the hype, and creates great excitement for the fans. However, as this variety of sideshows play themselves out, the measure of success will come down to which team puts their week of preparations to best use over 80 minutes on Saturday.

I am satisfied with how we have prepared. The guys have acclimatized quickly, the intensity has been impressive, the work ethic high and the attention to detail spot on. As a coaching staff we have put in the long hours, both in Cape Town before our departure and here in Cardiff, to make sure the team delivers in the manner we expect at the weekend.

John Smit will take the re! ins at the Captain's Run on Friday after which the tense countdown begins to Saturday's game. We are looking forward to it

The city of Cardiff is buzzing with excitement ahead of the game and there is an air of expectation for their team to do well. I am sure there is a similar expectation amongst our fans back home and we aim not to disappoint you.

The Welsh will certainly be better than they were in the two tests in South Africa earlier this year. They have some of their star players back as well as the benefit of home ground advantage and a passionate and very partisan home crowd.

This presents us with a major challenge but it is one that I am confident we can meet to ensure that we get this very important tour off on the right note. We have a squad of players that oozes talent, is in good physical shape and is brimming with confidence ahead of the game.

The significance of these three tests cannot be under-estimated as they w! ill have an important bearing on preparations for the British ! and Iris h Lions' visit to our shores next year.

But the immediate challenge is the Welsh Dragons, which is where our attention is focused 100% at the moment.

Gerrard back at training

Steven Gerrard has resumed training after he was charged for an alleged assault in a bar. He, along with two other men where charged yesterday after the brawl at a night club.

The midfielder has been giving the backing of his club Liverpool. In a statement released the club say, "Steven has been an outstanding servant to the club for the last 10 years and the club will give him all the support he needs at this time."

If Gerrard is convicted he could see himself spend up to five years in prison however he will want to put that at the back of his mind and concentrate on team's preparation for their FA Cup game against Preston on Saturday.

Apart from the off field events Liverpool are currently top of the Premiership with Gerrard scoring eight goals so far this season.

Apart from his success in the league was acknowledged for his great skill when he was named in the Fifpro's team of the year squad, which is vote! d for by fellow soccer players.

Honda is out of F1 effective immediately

Honda have announced their immediate withdrawal from Formula One, the Japanese manufacturer's president and CEO Takeo Fukui confirmed on Friday morning.
After a night of frenzied speculation about the future of the Honda Racing team, Fukui told a hastily called press conference in Tokyo that difficult financial conditions had forced the company to make the decision.

"Honda must protect its core business activities and secure the long term as widespread uncertainties in the economies around the globe continue to mount," he said. "A recovery is expected to take some time. "Under these circumstances, Honda has taken swift and flexible measures to counter this sudden and expansive weakening of the marketplace in all business areas. However, in recognition of the need to optimize the allocation of management resources, including investment regarding the future, we have decided to withdraw from Formula One participation. We will enter into consultation with the ass! ociates of Honda Racing F1 Team and its engine supplier Honda Racing Development regarding the future of the two companies. This will include offering the team for sale."

Autosport.com understands that Honda Racing team principal Ross Brawn and CEO Nick Fry are due to fly to Tokyo on Monday for talks with the Japanese chiefs about the future.
Sources suggest that Honda chiefs have been told that the team will be funded only until March - giving them three months to find a new buyer before they are shut down. It is understood staff have been told that potential buyers have already been lined up, with Brawn already focused on securing an engine supply deal with Ferrari to try and keep the team in F1. Fukui admitted that the withdrawal decision had been a hard one to take - especially as Honda had taken a victory as a car maker in 2006 and had already invested a huge amount of money in bidding to return to the top under the leadership of Brawn.

He ad! ded: "In its third era of Formula One activities, Honda has be! en parti cipating in Formula One races from the 2000 season, initially with BAR, by adopting a new format of jointly developing racing machines. Subsequently, in a move to meet the changing environment surrounding Formula One, we switched to running a 100% Honda-owned team commencing with the 2006 season. Surmounting many challenges, the Honda Team achieved a grand prix victory in 2006, enabling Honda to receive overwhelming support from Honda fans around the world that were looking forward to greater success. It, therefore, has been an extremely difficult decision for us to come to this conclusion without having been able to fully meet the expectations of our fans. By making the best of what we have learned during these times of economic turmoil, coupled with the spirit of challenge gained through active participation in racing, we intend to continue with our commitment in meeting new challenges. Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank our fans and all tho! se who have supported Honda's Formula One efforts, including everyone in the world of Formula One."

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/72322

This is a major blow to Formula One and cements the impact of the financial crisis on the sport. Although it pains me to say it, Max Mosley and his slash and burn cost cutting measures seem to be a truly necessary 'evil'. This may be a temporary fall in the economy, it looks very necessary to do these cost cutting measures to ensure there is an F1 when the economy picks back up.

As mentioned in the story, it is possible for the remnants of the team will be on the grid, it will be very difficult. The question is who will buy the team? It would be ironic if Prodrive and its chairman, David Richards would be interested with some afore mentioned assistance from Ferrari.

George Gillett's Liverpool Statements Don't Stack Up

A fan can accept football illiteracy from its owners because they know the vast majority are only in it for kudos or profit.

They can also excuse a lack of cash, if, like Bill Kenwright, they're in it mostly for love. Fans can even live with pig-headedness, aloofness and a poor knowledge of the club. But they cannot accept having the truth distorted or hidden from them.

Which is what George Gillett, and his estranged partner in crime, have been doing for almost three years.

This week alone, thanks to a leaked exchange wi! th the fans group Spirit of Shankly, the former owner of Montreal Canadians ice-hockey team, came out with four statements which do not hold up to scrutiny.

(1) "The club's debt situation is very sound." It was £44.8 million when Hicks and Gillett took over. It's now £245 million.

(2) "It wasn't me who said we'd start building a new stadium in 60 days, it was Hicks." Check You Tube. It's you.

(3) "We've spent £128 million on top of what's come in over the past 18 months to buy players." Rafa Benitez's net spend in that time has been £20 million.

(4) "Liverpool is in an extraordinarily good financial position." So how come the banks have told you to find new investment, sell-up or they'll re-possess the club?

This opportunistic, former bit-part player in a small-time North American sport has been found to be totally out of his depth in English football. His deceit merely adds insult to injury.

As they say in i! ce-hockey, it's time to get the puck out of here.

How Rafa Benitez Lost The Trust Of Liverpool Fans For Good

The boos that echoed round Anfield tolled the knell of Rafa Benitez' rapidly parting Liverpool day.

It was not just the defeat by Lyons that raised the spectre, more the angry reaction of many Reds fans to the decision to replace Yossi Benayoun with Ukrainian flop Andriy Voronin.

With Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson now joining Fernando Torres as major doubts for Sunday's make or break home game with Manchester United, Benitez knows he is on the rack.

But while the Spaniard may believe that events outside his control are conspiring against him, the seeds of Benitez' downfall were sown by himself nine months ago - and given extra encouragement to grow by one catastrophically wrong transfer decision in the summer.

On January 9, Liverpool were in prime position to finally win back the crown that has been out of their grasp since 1990.

A Steven Gerrard-inspired 5-1 thum! ping of Newcastle meant Liverpool began 2009 two points clear of the rest despite a catalogue of dropped points on home soil against the likes of Stoke, Fulham, West Ham and Hull.

Benitez had been increasingly angered by the behaviour of arch-rival Sir Alex Ferguson, who had assume the role of his personal bete noir since Chelsea sacked Portuguese braggart Jose Mourinho and, believing himself in a position of strength, decided to go on the offensive.

It was, without question, the biggest mistake he could have made. What Benitez said was, in the main, not only justified but also accurate.

Fergie does get away with more than any other manager. Always has, always will. Referees, the Premier League, the FA - let alone the media - are terrified by him and he plays on those insecurities to ensure he gets what he wants by blast and bluster.

But saying it so publicly, calling it on with a man who would never be shy of fighting back, and w! ho knew his own players would not wilt under the pressure of t! he title run-in, left Benitez' own players harbouring doubts.

If the manager could not keep calm from a position of strength, one or two of them ventured privately, how would he react when it started to get twitchy, as it always does?

What followed was almost inevitable, successive draws against Stoke, Everton and Wigan that saw Liverpool tumble to third, five more costly points dropped against Manchester City and doomed Middlesbrough the following month, the championship slipped from their grasp in the space of just seven games.

Even then, as Benitez and his players ruefully know, it might have changed after they thumped United at Old Trafford, only for the gods - and referees - to come to Fergie's aid: the extra minutes against Aston Villa which allowed Federico Macheda to emerge from nowhere and, most infamously, Howard Webb's shocker against Spurs that was the pivotal moment of the entire campaign.

For Liverpool and Benitez, just four! points adrift in the final reckoning, it should have been the launchpad for the coming campaign, with all their rivals under clouds.

United had to cope with life after Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as the absence of Carlos Tevez; Chelsea, under new management again, with an ageing team; Arsenal having lost Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure.

All Benitez needed to do, surely, was hold things together, add a couple of new faces, keep a steady hand on the tiller. Instead, he sold Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid, taking the £30m and spending most of it in Alberto Aquilani, who may make his Liverpool debut for the successor to the man who bought him.

Alonso provided balance and security, the ability to win the ball and play an early pass. By contrast, Javier Mascherano appears to be pining for the move to Barcelona that did not materialise, while the manager's faith in Lucas Leiva seems increasingly unfathomable with every passing week.

So it c! omes to this. Twelve matches in the competitions that count. S! ix defea ts.

Under the financial "masterplan" drafted by those footballing giants Tom Hicks and George Gillett, the Liverpool manager was only supposed to spend £20m per year for the next five seasons.

But that was predicated on a guarantee of Champions League football into the knockout stages, and the £30m that produces annually.

Suddenly, on the verge of group stage elimination, this year's income stream will be cut. Failure to make the top four - and if it becomes five defeats out of 10 in the league on Sunday, while City, Villa and Spurs keep on winning, that becomes a genuine possibility - and the drama does indeed become a crisis.

In Rafa we trust? Not any more, it seems. Those boos told the story and the truth.

Fernando Torres Torments Liverpool Manager Rafael Benítez

The fans half feared it, the pundits shook their heads and even the club had doubts, but when it comes to juggling the demands of the Barclays Premier League and European competition, while Fulham are coping magnificently, Rafael Benítez's team are not.

The fragility of Liverpool's season was never starker. Benítez is having to calculate how many minutes he can squeeze from his top players without exacerbating their various injuries. It is no way to run a team who were, at the end of last season, among the favourites to win the title and to reach the final stages of the Champions League.

The maths for Benítez are becoming more intricate by the hour. It is clear to the least medically minded that Fernando Torres needs a rest; a proper legs up, TV on, cuppa at the ready rest. But, because he is not as hampered by injury as some of his team-mates, the striker has to feature.

Benítez has alw! ays been noted for his scientific method, but the amount of complex mathematics he has to contend with is bordering on the ridiculous.

The 80 minutes that Torres played against Manchester United at Anfield resulted in the Spain forward needing four days of rest. So, children, heads down, turn your exam papers over and calculate how many minutes he should have been allowed against Fulham if he is to be fit for the match against Lyons on Wednesday.

Benítez and his staff decided the answer is 63, but only on Wednesday will we find out if that was the correct calculation.

Of course, there would be little in the way of furrowed brows and calculators if Benítez could rustle up a bench brimming with precocious talent and impressive experience. But he cannot. Perhaps the most telling element to this defeat was that Roy Hodgson, the Fulham manager, had to contend with two injured players — Diomansy Kamara and Damien Duff — at half-time but their repl! acements were, if anything, more influential.

Fulha! m can tr avel to Rome for their Europa League match on Thursday buoyed by a dream victory. So how does Hodgson get the balance right between domestic and European demands?

"You don't, it would be naive to believe you can get it right," he said. "The fact is, both competitions are such enormously difficult competitions to win. The moment you dilute your chances of winning one competition by trying to win the other one, it makes life much more difficult. You get injuries because players don't get the time to recover."

"Tell me about it," Benítez might have muttered, having seen Torres warm down after the game, looking extremely uncomfortable as he did so. Surely there must be a temptation to give him a long rest rather than juggle spurts of recuperation with playing time? But Benítez is aware that to have kept a partially fit Torres on the bench would have left him open to even more criticism.

The carefully computed moment for the departure of Torres ca! me with the game poised at 1-1 and though Torres was clearly not functioning at full pelt, he was Liverpool's most potent threat and his withdrawal must have affected the morale of those left on the pitch.

Fulham took the lead against the run of play, shortly after Yossi Benayoun had hit the crossbar. Bobby Zamora darted, as if invisible, between Emiliano Insúa and Sotirios Kyrgiakos to connect with Duff's cross.

For all Liverpool's possession — 74 per cent — they created few real threats and their equaliser came as a consequence of a ricochet that fell at the feet of Torres, who reacted with almost frighteningly quick reflexes to fire past Mark Schwarzer.

Philipp Degen and Jamie Carragher were dismissed within three minutes of each other in the second half, but Fulham had already regained the lead. Dirk Kuyt, with his customary zeal, elected to keep the ball in play acrobatically, but inadvertently set up a Fulham attack that was finished b! y the neat clip of Erik Nevland's heel. "There was a bit of a ! mix-up o ut wide and once you go down to nine men it is virtually impossible," Carragher said.

Fulham proceeded to have fun against depleted opponents and sealed victory when Clint Dempsey almost lazily ran to meet Nevland's through-ball.

Benítez disputed both red-card decisions. Degen can make a strong case that he should have been merely cautioned for his foul on Dempsey and Carragher claimed he reached the ball as he tangled with Zamora. But although luck is not on the Liverpool manager's side, some of the club's fans trudged away wondering why Benayoun had been left to shuttle away thanklessly on the flank when he would have thrived operating directly behind Torres.

Even so, in spite of the bedraggled mess Liverpool appeared at the final whistle, few of those fans would bet against the team rising to the seemingly impossible challenge of reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League once again.

Trombino breaks leg in crash

By John Hopkins

TORONTO, ON -- Frank Trombino reportedly suffered a compound fracture of his lower leg in a high speed crash at Nelson Ledges last weekend.

According to Jeff Bloor of Cyclemax, who said he had spoken to Trombino since the incident, the Kleinburg, ON racer was resting comfortably in hospital in Warren, OH and was scheduled to have surgery on the leg, which was broken just above the ankle, today (Tuesday).

Bloor said the accident was caused by a rear tire blowout on Trombino's bike, but it was undetermined what had led to the failure.

Trombino was taking part in a WERA event at the track.

More changes at 1530 Homer

Sadly one of the best parts of our local sports radio station is changing. C. Trent Rosencrans will no longer be there "blogging machine." It's now being reported that there were several layoffs at Clear Channel. C. Trent is not alone, Alan Cutler and Paul Daugherty are also out! This doesn't come too long after two fixtures of the sports talk landscape were already let go when Andy Furhman and Richard Skinner were fired. What a shame! C. Trent and Doc were two of the best things going in this city.

More information to come.

**Update**
The only local programming that 1530 Homer will have is Lance McCallister from 3-6. Lance will also do the Reds pre-game show. Mo Egger was retained by Clear Channel but will not host a show on the air. Producers Travis Holmes, Matt Steinmann and Mark Chalifoux were also let go from Clear Channel. This is a real shame, we are losing our local sports talk market which was one of the strongest that I have ! heard. I spend a lot of time listening to local sports talk and we will lose a part of our community. I would imagine that Fox Sports National radio will be picked up by 1530 homer.

Hard Knocks Observations

Last night, HBO aired its second installment of Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Cincinnati Bengals and once again succeeded in putting on an entertaining, informative, and, especially for Bengals' fans, thought-provoking program.  This week's segment focused primarily on the team's preparation for its first preseason game and its aftermath.  Instead of flooding the blog with a barrage of one-liners, here are three observations I came away with from the show.

Coaches' Evaluations:  I could watch a whole show on Bengals coaches evaluating their players.  I found the scene after the New Orleans game where the coaches (sans Mike Brown) evaluated the team's performance to be revealing but too short to satiate any hunger to know how the players really stand among the coaches.  In particular, the portion of the meeting where they! discussed Chris "Slim" Henry as a guy who still has some maturing to do as evidenced by his desire to make a lot of commotion after big plays.  Hard Knocks showed a clip from the first preseason game of Marvin Lewis pleading with Slim to get away from the Saints' sideline after a touchdown and that pretty much summed it up.  It capped off a portion earlier in the show that discussed Chris' past problems, the changes he's made in his life, and the Bengals' -or should I say Mike Brown's?- willingness to give him one last chance to walk the line.

I can guess but I'd also be curious to know for sure which areas Bob Bratkowski referred to as lacking talent on the offense.

Carson and Chad: Last night, we got a glimpse of Carson on the field and how he interacts with the other players.  Since Carson arrived in Cincinnati, I've never been impressed with many o! f his interviews or conferences in the sense that I thought he! really assumed and was comfortable with the mantle of leader of the team but I always suspected that it was just his distaste for interacting with the media.  Despite that, I've continued to read reports to the contrary.  After last night's episode, he seemed much more comfortable in the leadership role than I had previously thought.  He was also pretty funny and I thoroughly enjoyed the clips of him and Kyle cook as well as his refined palate for Gatorade.

As for Chad: I like Chad.  A year ago today, everyone was scheming for the best way to get him out of the 'Nati, perhaps rightfully so.  But when he's focused on being the best at his position and is in the right frame of mind he's a treat to watch.  Despite what John Kiesewetter thinks, I think Chad has made Hard Knocks even more fun to watch.

Andre Smith: If the edit of Katie Blackburn's conversation with Alvin Keels is any indication, Andre Smith might last longer than Justin Smith.  Keels is supposed to be in town after the Patriots game- let's hope that goes better than what last night's episode would suggest.  That's all I have to say about that.

20 Things that make you a sports doofus

I enjoyed this article listed here on ESPN Page 2. Check it out.

I am in violation of a few of them.
1. Wearing a team jersey inscribed with your name: I do have a Cincinnati Reds Jersey with my name on the back. In my defense this was a gift from my company for participating in an event at the ballpark. I have not worn it to a game, probably won't.

14.Having an intense fantasy sports discussion while attending an actual game: I have discussed my baseball team while at a baseball game.

18. Proclaiming special mastery of stadium scoreboard games: I pretty much rule at the scoreboard stumper. If you put Redleg2420 and I together we will dominate!

How the Red Sox should handle Ramirez

After watching the Manny Ramirez saga unfold over the past week, I can't help but think the solution is so simple, people are simply overlooking it. Essentially, there are three options on the table. The Red Sox can trade him, pick up his option or let him walk after the season. To me, the easiest, and most beneficial solution, would be to tell Ramirez now that the team will let him become a free agent after the season and here's why:

First off, a trade will be much too difficult for the Red Sox right now. According to Ken Rosenthal in his latest article on FoxSports.com, there's been speculation regarding the Mets and Phillies as showing interest. Regardless of which team is involved, there's no way the Red Sox will trade Ramirez in a deal straight up and get a player in return that fills the void left behind. Not happening. Manny is a 10 and 5 guy, and he'll want to be dealt to a contending team. That being said, any contender will not ship out an integral piece! of the offense in exchange for Ramirez. If that team is looking to win a World Series, it's looking to add Ramirez, not use him to replace someone. The only way a deal could be made straight up is if a team like the Rockies decided they were sellers, Ramirez waived his no-trade clause and both teams agreed on a Holliday for Ramirez deal. The odds of that are slim.

So that being said, another possibility would be the inclusion of a third or even fourth team, much like what occurred in the deal involving Nomar Garciaparra back in 2004. The Red Sox, Cubs, Twins and Expos were all a part of the deal, and there were a lot of moving parts to that deal. By including additional teams, Boston (Team A) could ship Ramirez to a team like the Phillies (Team B) in exchange for top prospects in the system. Those prospects, in turn, would never even begin their journey to Boston, instead heading to the third team involved (Team C), who accepted said prospects from Team! B while sending a star player to Team A. Team C, however, wou! ld need to be a seller, such as the Reds and slugger Austin Kearns. Deals like this become extremely complicated, and with only a few days left until the deadline, it's hard to say if it could happen in time. Again, the issue would be Ramirez and his no-trade clause. If he chooses to wave it, things might be easier, regardless of the number of teams involved.

The next option for Boston is to pick up Manny's option now and satisfy his financial worries. The genesis of the issue at hand is that Ramirez is uneasy with his dubious future in Boston and Major League Baseball. It can easily be said that he's no Barry Bonds. While mercurial, he does not alienate teammates nor cast a black shadow over the sport. His talent is second to none, and despite going on 36 now, he's still one of the premier hitters in the game. Ramirez will play somewhere next year, there's no question about that, but he'd rather know now where that will be. Therefore, if Theo and Co. ca! n tolerate the stupid "Manny Being Manny" phenomenon that sweeps through Boston every year, then pick up the option and reap the benefits of a .300/30/100 season hitting behind David Ortiz next year.

My problem with this option is that I don't necessarily think that Manny is worth the $20 million he'd be getting. He's a known commodity and has had a much better season in 2008 than I think most people credit him for. Let's not forget that Ortiz was out 45 games. Not having him in the lineup, no matter how well JD Drew, Kevin Youkilis and Mike Lowell are hitting, affects Manny in a negative way. I think he can put up the same numbers next year and most likely the year after. This guy will be a great hitter into his 40's. But at $20 million a pop? I'm not sure about that. And if you pick up the first option, you might as well pick up the second option or else you're going to experience the same media frenzy next year, because it will just end up being another contra! ct season and ambiguous situation for Ramirez yet again.
!
Th at brings me to the third option for Boston, and the one that I think is so clear-cut people are just overlooking it. It's like searching frantically for your watch for an hour before realizing it's on your wrist. It's right there in front of you, yet you refuse to consider that as even an option.

What I think Boston should do is sit down with Ramirez and tell the slugger it is not in the team's best interest to trade him or pick up his options at the end of the season. He's contributed a lot to this organization, given them two World Series titles and helped turn this into one of the biggest sports franchises on the globe. However, the team is going to move in another direction and allow Ramirez to seek greener pastures elsewhere after the season is over. He's earned that right and should have ample opportunity to secure his financial future elsewhere.

Here's why I think this is best for the Red Sox. By declining to trade him or pick up the options, it! truly does make this an urgent contract situation for Ramirez. He'll now be faced with the grim reality that his numbers at the conclusion of 2008 will ultimately determine the girth of the contract he signs prior to 2009. So far, he's having a terrific season offensively. But there are many pundits who criticize the drop in average, power and production over the last couple seasons as a sign – trend, even – that he is slowing down and fading into the twilight of his career. These next two months would be the perfect opportunity for Ramirez to prove those critics wrong and showcase his still prevalent skills. We could see Ramirez turn into a beast down the stretch, running out ground balls, driving the ball the other way, hitting homeruns, producing runs and hustling on the basepaths night in and night out. Look at last night's game against the Yankees as a microcosm of what could potentially occur down the stretch. That way, when he leaves Boston and begins acquiring inte! rest from other teams, his 2008 resume would command the massi! ve deal he is looking for.

As far as the Red Sox, a pair of compensation draft picks would likely come as a result. And we all know how well the team has drafted over the last several years. Those picks could even be used as trade bait, packaged with a minor leaguer or two, to acquire a power hitting corner outfielder from a team looking to rebuild.

What do you think the Red Sox should do?

Cleveland Rocks?

Well LeBron James is already in the 2nd round and looks ready to make a trip back to the NBA Finals, and the Indians snapped the Red Sox 11 game winning streak (with a big assist to the dreadful Julio Lugo), but those teams are still in Cleveland. Enjoy this:

Oh and for the record, how good are Pierce and Rondo? And what a series. I would write about it, but everyone else is, not sure what to add, except wow.

BJal's Lock du Jour - Sunday, October 25

BJal is back on a losing streak, dropping his last two picks, both college football games. I thought the Army pick was terrible, but I actually believe in the Notre Dame (-7.5) pick. And if Hughes didn't get dropped at the goal line on 4th down, the Irish would have covered. Did anyone notice him drop straight down on that? I was watching the game with my buddy Milano (save the cookie jokes) and he pointed it out to me during the replay. We were fully convinced that Hughes was knocked out cold there ala Anquan Boldin. After the play the NBC cameras showed him in a world of hurt and somewhat out of it, which makes complete sense. Great hit. Even better stop.

But today BJal is going for St. Louis (+13.5) over the Colts. Jimmy the Greek took the Colts, and based on performance and reputation, I think BJal is looking at yet another losing streak. Start picking opposites, pal.

BJal's Lock du Jour: Rams (+13.5) over Colts
Overall: 6-11...gross

Greek Super League Review

Title contenders Olympiacos moved top of the Greek Super League with a 1-0 win over Panionios.

Jaouad Zairi grabbed the only goal of the game for the home side after 17 minutes.

Aris Salonika also climbed the table into third place with a last-minute victory over 10-man FC Xanthi.

The visitors had Dimitris Souanis sent off on the stroke of half-time but looked like hanging on for an unlikely point until Sebastian Abreu snatched a winner at the death.

! The other game of the day between Larissa and Giannina finished goalless.

Iran Pro League Review

Peykan remain a point clear at the top of the Iran Pro League table despite being held to a goalless draw by Mes.

Second-placed Esteghlal failed to take advantage as Hossein Kazemi netted five minutes before the hour mark to cancel out Adel Kolahkaj's 49th minute opener for Perspolis.

Moghavemat moved up to fourth place after Abumoslem's Khani struck with 10 minutes remaining to cancel out Mehdi Nazari's 19th minute strike.

Elsewhere, Foolad remain winless after Reza Norouzi netted fiv! e minutes before the hour mark to earn Steel Azin a 1-0 win, while Malavan and Teraktor Sazi shared a 1-1 draw.

Carl Froch retains WBC super-middleweight title in clash of styles with Andre Dirrell

Carl Froch retained the World Boxing Council super-middleweight title on a split points decision in Nottingham in the early hours of Sunday morning, nicking the fight from challenger Andre Dirrell in an awkward clash of styles at a sold-out Trent FM Arena.

In many ways it was a frustrating contest to witness. It certainly proved a poser to judge. The three ringside judges, Daniel Van De Wiele, Massimo Barrovecchio and Alejandro Rochin, concurred on only four rounds, scoring it, respectively, 115-112 and 115-112 for Froch and 113-114 for Dirrell. A ! point deducted in the 10th from Dirrell for holding by Panamanian referee Hector Afu cost the American.

It was a desperately tight affair, which could be debated either way. If styles make fights, this was where the tango met the foxtrot. Froch, unbeaten in 26 paid fights, has been victorious in three contests for the WBC 168lb gong inside a year. Some achievement.

In this one, he had to 'win ugly', against an opponent who alternated between movement and holding, in between displaying some very sharp skills.

It was Dirrell's first career loss. "He's a nightmare with his style," Rob McCracken, Froch's trainer, said.

Froch faces Mikkel Kessler, the World Boxing Association champion, in his next Super Six Classic contest – the super-middleweight tournament bringing the top six fighters in the world together over 18 months to find an undisputed champion – most likely in March or April next yea! r, with a football stadium in Copenhagen the likely venue. !

"Kessler will come for war, it's a fans fight, and one I'm relishing," Froch said. "Hopefully he'll beat Andre Ward in their fight next month so both the WBC and WBA belts will be on the line."

The Dane, beaten only by Joe Calzaghe in his career, commands a market share of 75 per cent of the terrestrial television market in his homeland when he fights, and a 30,000 sell-out is not unthinkable for a unification of the WBC and WBA belts.

Froch has been without a network broadcast deal for his last two defences – last night's contest was shown on Primetime, a one-off pay-per-view channel – but The Daily Telegraph understands that, behind the scenes, negotiations are ongoing for Froch v Dirrell to be replayed next weekend on terrestrial television.

Earlier, in Berlin, in the opening fight of the Super Six Classic, Germany-based Armenian Arthur Abraham enacted a last-ditch knockout of American Jermain Taylor.

Sevilla 0-0 Espanyol

Sevilla were left frustrated by a stubborn Espanyol outfit in the Primera Liga on Saturday.

The Andalusian side dominated from the outset and Espanyol had goalkeeper Carlos Kameni to thank for a number of key saves which kept the visitors on level terms at the break.

And Espanyol continued to stifle their hosts after the interval, but it looked as if they would pay the price when defender Nico Pareja was sent off on the hour.

However, Sevilla remained unable! to find a way through in the closing stages, despite enjoying the best chances, and passed up the opportunity to close in on Real Madrid, who could only draw at Sporting Gijon earlier this evening, and Barcelona.

Sevilla saw their impressive five-match winning streak in the league come to an end last weekend following a surprise 1-0 defeat at Deportivo La Coruna.

Espanyol, meanwhile, continued their record of being unbeaten since the second round of matches.

Mauricio Pochettino's side lost their first two league games this term, but came into this clash in eighth place following three wins and two draws since then.

The Catalans therefore headed into this match with their confidence high and they created the first chance after just two minutes, when Luis Garcia controlled well and tested Javi Varas with a smart shot which the Sevilla goalkeeper did well to save with his feet.

Three minutes later, Sevilla threatened for the first time, when! Jesus Navas tried to beat Kameni with an audacious lob, but t! he Camer oon stopper reacted superbly.

A minute later, the home side could have had a penalty as Pareja handled, but the referee waved play on.

The game continued at a frenetic pace and, after Jose Callejon had shot wide for Espanyol, Kameni denied Diego Perotti with a brilliant save halfway through the first period.

Sevilla were creating the best opportunities and the lively Perotti tested Kameni once again before the break, with the African eventually gathering at the second attempt.

After the restart, Sevilla continued to dominate, but Espanyol were defending well.

However, the Catalans looked to have it all to do after Pareja saw red on the hour for a second yellow card after scything down the recently-introduced Diego Capel.

The next chance fell to Espanyol, though, and it was a good one. Ivan De La Pena, who had replaced Shunsuke Nakamura 10 minutes earlier, whipped in a lovely free-kick and Ivan Alonso, unmarked, wastefully headed wide! from six yards.

Luis Garcia then blasted over as Espanyol made light of their numerical disadvantage, but the Catalans had plenty of defending to do after that.

Kameni did well to keep out Sebastien Squillaci's header and also saved from Renato late on.

Capel, Julien Escude and Arouna Kone all came close as Sevilla piled on the pressure in the closing stages, but Espanyol held out to extend their unbeaten run to six games.

The visitors could even have won it at the death, when Callejon shot wide with only Javi Varas to beat from close range.

The Catalans remain provisionally in eighth, while Sevilla stay third but will drop a place if Deportivo beat Valladolid tomorrow.

Fulham 3 Liverpool 1

The Premier League game between Fulham and Liverpool at Craven Cottage on Saturday Oct 31 2009.

Liverpool suffered their sixth defeat in seven outings in embarrassing fashion, finishing with nine men after both Philipp Degen and Jamie Carragher were sent off against Fulham.

After the jubi! lation of the 2-0 win over Manchester United, Liverpool stumbled to another loss ahead of next week's crucial Champions League trip to Lyon.

Fulham took a 24th-minute lead against the run of play through Bobby Zamora before Fernando Torres levelled two minutes before the interval. But substitute Erik Nevland regained a 74th minute lead before Clint Dempsey claimed the third, in the 87th minute.

The first half was memorable for the fact that Liverpool enjoyed almost total domination yet went behind to Fulham's first attack of the game.

Before Zamora's goal, Liverpool had bombarded Mark Schwarzer and should have been comfortably ahead.

Missing seven players including Steve Gerrard and Glen Johnson, with groin strains, and Alberto Aquilani, with a virus, Liverpool first threatened in the sixth minute when Schwarzer had to punch clear from Yossi Benayoun's deft header.

Torres, passed fit before the game, saw one opportunity ! run just clear and then right-back Degen, playing in a forward roll, fed Benayoun and the Israeli struck the cross-bar.

Fulham responded with a well-crafted and easily finished goal, in the 24th minute, with what were their first foray forward.

Diomansy Kamara fed Damien Duff and his quick cross was side-footed beyond Pepe Reina by Bobby Zamora for his fifth goal of the season.

It was the first goal Fulham had scored against Liverpool in five meetings, but the visitors responded before the interval through Torres.

Andriy Voronin's header struck Chris Baird and rebounded into the path of Torres and the Spaniard responded in typical fashion, finding the bottom corner for his 10th goal of the season, in only 12 starts.

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson gambled with two half-time changes, with Zoltan Gera and Erik Nevland replacing Zoltan Gera and Damien Duff.

And Nevland had an early chance to make an impact w! hen Jonathan Greening's ball sent him into the Liverpool area, but Emiliano Insua cleared the danger.

Fulham could have had a penalty when Carragher leant into Zamora and both fell to the ground, but referee Lee Mason was adamant that no foul had been committed.

In the 63rd minute, Torres was taken off – Liverpool fans will hope it is to rest the striker ahead of the trip to France – with Ryan Babel coming on.

And in the 73rd minute, Fulham were ahead again when Konchesky crossed, Reina punched the ball to Gera, his headed pass went back into the goal area and Nevland scored from close range to claim his first goal since May.

It got worse for Liverpool when, in the 79th minute Degen was dismissed for lunging at Clint Dempsey and, three minutes later, Carragher was dismissed for a professional foul on Zamora, with the defender reluctant to leave the field.

With Liverpool down to nine men, Nevland! fed Dempsey for the third, in the 87th minute.

Welcome Back Jose Mourinho

by Steve Hill

Jose Mourinho was announced as the new manager of Inter Milan and I for one would like to welcome the special one back to the realms of football. Jose is quite a character and has been truly missed by those who love the sport of football.

Mourinho breathed new life into the world of English football when he took over as the manager of Chelsea and I am sure that he will have a similar positive affect on the Italian football league.

The majority of the supporters of Chelsea would love Mourinho to be back in charge of their league in the future and now has legend status at Stamford Bridge.

So what can Jose Mourinho bring to Inter Milan? Passion, pride, success and winning football is the answer. Mourinho has already been victorious in the ever popular Champions league and this will no doubt be his goal for the coming season. Who would beat against a Chelsea versus Inter Milan final next season? Football seems to make the! se types of events happen.

The Inter Milan supporters sure have a lot to look forward to. Their will be frills and spills as well as a huge amount of entertainment. Just listening to what Jose has to say pre and post match is fascinating in itself.

Going back to Chelsea I have heard rumours that Zola could well be on his way back in some capacity. This is just a rumour at the moment but this itself would really please the Chelsea supporters as well as the rest of the English football public.

Good luck Jose Mourinho; I look forward to hearing and watching your antics next year. Perhaps one day you might even manage my favourite team, Birmingham City â€" some how I doubt it however.

Manchester United - what prospects for 2009/10?

by Steve Yates

There are many reasons why Manchester United are the most successful football team in England - and have been for as long as most people can remember. And especially since the development of the Premier League, the club has entered an era of almost unprecedented success.

The Old Trafford Stadium keeps expanding - its current capacity is over 76,000 - and the demand for tickets shows no sign of slowing down, despite the economic downturn.

Much has been made, quite rightly, of the influence over the club of the legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. A blunt, at times irascible Scotsman, Ferguson has been at 'The Theatre of Dreams' since November, 1986 - a tenure almost unprecedented in any era of the game. He has managed to stay hungry, determined and, most importantly, in total command during that time and will, when he does eventually decide to stand down, undoubtedly be hard to replace.

Ferguson's main attribute, for ! me, has been to keep United at the top whilst continually changing his team. There has been one spell - between 2002 and 2005 - when the club 'only' had an FA Cup to display from the major competitions; but even then they could hardly be said to have languished in mediocrity.

The manager has had that priceless ability of being able to move players in and out of his squad, without it disrupting team spirit or damaging the pattern of play. Additionally, he's shown a completely single-minded approach to moving out players he thought would be possibly past their best or simply not up to standard. Yes, he's made a few mistakes - Kleberson, Veron, Taibi, Djemba Djemba, Jordi Cruyff - but some of those could realistically have been expected to have been successful. Kleberson was the midfield hub of a Brazilian team that won the World Cup, for goodness sake.

However, I do happen to think that Sir Alex has a hard season in prospect. Not one where United are in ! danger of plummeting down to fifth, or anything like that. But! I do fe el things could be a little more problematic when it comes to running away with the league title again.

Now, I'm not just saying that because Ronaldo has flown away to his spiritual home - I'm sure they'll suit each other perfectly. Although a player of his skill - and the number of goals he scored - will not easily be found, it's certain the staff at Old Trafford will bring at least one player in to take the winker's place.

My problems are elsewhere. I do think there are a number of players who are just about past their use-by date. Ryan Giggs might have been PFA Player of the Year but we all know that was a sentimental award - unless he really was exceptional in the 15 league games he started during the season! Clearly, Giggs, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes cannot be expected to play much next season.

Then there are others about whom you can't be really sure they're going to be quite good enough. Darren Fletcher has come on enormously in the! last two years but the same can't really be said for Nani, Anderson, Ji-Sung Park and one or two more. It was abundantly clear in the Champions' League Final that Barcelona's midfield was inordinately superior to Manchester's. Owen Hargreaves, hopefully for United, will return to something like his best form - but Michael Carrick still looks a bit of a 'flat track bully' to me,

And, of course, there are the classic Berbatov and Rooney problems. I don't suppose I'm alone in wondering what on earth Wayne Rooney was doing spending half of last season stuck out on the left 'doing a job for the team' and looking a shadow of the player we all think he could be. And the manager's faith in the expensive Berbatov was clearly demonstrated in the last few vital matches of the season when the player barely got picked. Personally, for all Tevez's enthusiasm and running around, the best pairing up front for Manchester United has to be the intelligence of Berbatov - who did ha! ve more 'assists' than any other United player last year - wit! h the br illiant Rooney playing in his best position alongside him.

I am looking forward to the 2009/2010 season in the Premier League. Manchester United can be sure of playing their fast, flowing football and will, of course, be right there at the end. I do think, though, that, if they are going to achieve the amazing feat of four titles in a row, the manager has got quite a lot of hard work to do.

Somma dà la scossa all'Unione

TRIESTE

Simon Kjaer, giovane e abile difensore centrale delPalermo, oltremanica spopola.

L'Italia fu invitata a partecipare come Campione in carica.
